Dr. Van Opstal behaalde zijn diploma orthopedie en traumatologie aan de KU Leuven in 2011. Na zijn opleiding in verschillende Vlaamse ziekenhuizen ging hij zich verder bekwamen in de heup- en voetchirurgie in gerenommeerde centra binnen Europa. Hij spendeerde een jaar aan het University College Hospital in Londen en voltooide visiting fellowships in het AMC in Amsterdam en het Centre Monégasque de Chirurgie Sportive in Monaco. Hij vervoegde de dienst orthopedie Lier in 2012. Sindsdien heeft hij zijn expertise opgebouwd in voor- en achtervoetchirurgie en introduceerde de direct anterieure toegang als minimaal invasieve methode om heupprothesen te plaatsen. In 2021 introduceerde hij samen met Dr. Myncke een heuprobot in het Heilig Hart ziekenhuis.
